"ANGKOR - KABUKI": LECTURE AND FILMS WITH JOEL MONTAGUE
We invite you to a lecture of ephemera collector Joel Montague, who will focus on the marketing of Angkor in France over three decades. During the first half of the 20th Century, a series of international expositions were held in France whose themes illustrated how an obscure archaeological site became at first a national monument for Cambodia and later on an icon for all of Colonial Indochina and a symbol of the success of Imperialism. By the last and greatest exposition (1931) Angkor Wat was finally held up as a model of national potential and a sign of Khmer racial supremacy. Also screening: Rare propaganda films from 1965, produced by the Cambodian Royal Palace.
