FIRST DOC-FILM AFTER POL POT: "KAMPUCHEA DEATH & REBIRTH"
This unique documentary (1979, 90min) was shot by famous GDR filmmakers Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann (Studio H&S). They are rated among the most productive and best-known East-German filmmakers, whose works have been screened in numerous international festivals. Modeling themselves on the tradition of Soviet film pioneer Dziga Vertov, H&S perceived documentary films as an instrument of political intervention. The scenes filmed during spring 1979 are part of history: Phnom Penh left to rampant nature, heaps of skulls and destroyed faces. The reports from the survivors are moving and harrowing.
