Abstract:

People in rural Vietnam are experiencing a variety of social changes, one of which is the increased importance of jobs outside of agriculture. In the years since doi moi, or the shift to free market economy, it has become increasingly difficult to earn enough income only from agriculture, and people, particularly the young, are beginning to seek jobs, both full-time and part-time, away from home. In this presentation, I am going to focus on the family in Can Tho Province in the Mekong Delta and examine the relationship between family and jobs. More specifically, I will mainly examine such criteria as: How people select jobs outside of family farming; how they seek these jobs; how workers use income from jobs; and if and how family values have changed when members work away from home. The aim is to discuss how working outside of family farming, which is a new experience for many people in the area, has affected "traditional" Vietnamese family. By doing so the presentation will also look at the role the family plays in the new economic situation under which people struggle to survive, compete and succeed.
