Garuda is a work initially created in 2003 by the choreographer Hun Pen, and developed over the course of the years through major artistic encounters such as the 78 Khmer Drum Orchestra by H.E. Hun Sarin. Although based in Cambodian tradition, the work is meant to be contemporary, dynamic and different. Its choreography explores intercultural relations, questions of identity and involvement-- but love plays a part as well.
On both evenings of the Roam performances, Hun Pen will first present an excerpt from this spectacle lasting fifteen minutes.
The piece Fang Lao (Listen to It), a continuation of work begun in Asia in 2007, is the story of encounters and new experiences from Laotian, Thai and French artists of Laotian origin. (...) From one world to another, across borders, and are told about what is here and what is there, through expressive contemporary dance, hip hop, traditional Laotian dance, and the Thai « Khon », performed by masked dancers who illustrate episodes from the Ramayana, the epic myths of the gods of Southeast Asia. Throughout the spectacle, the music links choreographed scenes with instruments native to areas of Southeast Asia. « Fang lao » is a choreographed footbridge in perpetual motion. Through the dances, words and songs come from the « familiar faraway, » an invitation to a disorientation, to a different daily life, and a discovery of original meanings that bring together these men and women.
