Talks and 7 Screenings of Yvong Hem Films

In order to pay tribute to the former famous filmmaker Yvon Hem who passed away on August 10, 2012 Bophana Center will organize special talks and 7-day screenings of his works to show his contribution to the Cambodian cinema production.

The program is as follows

Friday 17, August - 4pm
Shadow of Darkness
Directed by Yvon Hem, 1h51min, 1987, Khmer version with English subtitles
It was the first cinema (16mm) which was produced after the Democratic Kampuchea. Interpreted by Thoang Vutha and Pisith Pilika. A family is executed by the Khmer Rouge because the youngest son of the family secretly cooks rice in the forest. Only the eldest son safely escapes from the execution. He meets with members of a struggle movement who are moving toward Vietnam.

Saturday 18, August - 2pm
Golden Slumbers 
Directed by Davy Chou, 1h36min, 2011, khmmer version with English subtitles
More than 400 films produced between 1960 and 1975 and about 30 films left after the end of the Khmer Rouge regime. Golden Slumbers or Cambodian filmmakers who survived, awakens the once magnificent Cambodian film history from its deep sleep.

Monday 20, August - 4pm
Sovanpanhcha
Directed by Yvon Hem, 2h10 min, 1970, Khmer version
Prince Phinvong Koma discovers that the giant Krong Kram killed his father and concealed his body in order to become king in his place. The prince narrowly escapes death himself when Garuda Phy Yol Pheak, an old friend of Krong Kram, saves the prince and his mother. The prince then learns magic from Garuda and seeks out the giant Krong Kram for revenge. But on the way, he meets Sovanpanhcha.

Tuesday 21, August - 4pm
Rumduol Angkor 
Directed by Yvon Hem, 2h21min, 2004, Khmer version with English subtitles
After living in the United States for 20 years, Jonh, a son of a company President, returns to Cambodia for succeeding his father. His cousin, Rozet, attracted by his wealth, tries to become his lover. But during a visit to Angkor, John falls in love with Rumduol, the daughter of a Khmer Rouge commander who plans to integrate into the government.

Wednesday 22, August - 4pm
True love 
Directed by Yvon Hem, 1h11min, 1973, Khmer version
Pheakdey and her mother escape from the war area to live in Phnom Penh. They have no money, no job, no shelter, and no food. Her mother is sick and blinded by the war. Out of pity, a woman suggests that they live with her. She provides them everything they need. But the woman is actually ill-intentioned and wishes to traffic Pheakdey to millionaires. After knowing the fact, Pheakdey runs away and fortunately meets a handsome and wealthy man named Vichet who saves her.

Thursday 23, August - 4pm
Sovannahong
Directed by Yvon Hem, 1h48min, 1967, Khmer version
Keth Soriyong, a daughter of a ‘giant’ king, visits the forest. Being bored, she prays and asks for the divinity to guide the bouquet of flowers which she flows in the water to her lover. Sovannahong, a son of a king of another nation, accidentally encounters the flowers and falls head over heel in love with Keth Soriyong, the owner of the flower. Since having the flowers, he becomes worse and worse. His father makes a ceremony and has a golden swan produced to fly Sovannahong to Keth Soriyong. Sovannahong must face with many obstacles before they can live together.

Friday 24, August - 4pm
Inav Bosba 
Directed by Yvon Hem, 1h14min, 1968, Khmer version
Bosba is the princess of the palace of Aden and Inav is the prince of the palace of Daha. They engaged and they parents agreed. But the prince Inav, while believing naively what his mistress said, refused to marry the princess Bosba, who loves him very much. Another king takes advantage of the situation to ask for marrying Bosba, and threaten that he would make a war if she does not accept. A bit later, Inav realized that he is I love with Bosba. What is unexpected is that his mistress becomes jealous and use magic on Inav to be hunchback and mute.
