名古屋大学大学院法学研究科・法政国際教育協力研究センター（CALE）、法務総合研究所、財団法人国際民商事法センター、神戸大学大学院国際協力研究科、慶應義塾大学大学院法務研究科では、次世代のアジア諸国法研究者や法整備支援の担い手を育成するための連携企画「アジアのための国際協力in法分野2012」の一環として、サマースクール「アジアの法と社会2012」を開講致します。
このサマースクールでは、アジアの法と社会を学ぶことの意味、フィールドワークの方法論と研究史、法整備支援をめぐる理論動向、法曹実務家がアジア法整備支援に関わることの意義などについて、国内外の専門家を招聘して集中講義を行い、参加者が基礎知識や研究方法論を習得するとともに、次世代の若手研究者・実務家が出会い、ネットワークを形成する場となることが期待されます。

SUNS ARE SUNS is a solo theatre piece based on factual accounts of children and women who were victims of sex trafficking. The work uses text, Butoh and impressionistic movement to explore multi-layered responses to trauma. Dawn Akemi Saito (writer and performer) is an ArtWorks for Freedom Contributing Artist. She collaborates with director Maria Mileaf to give shape to this production.
SUNS ARE SUNS is a dramatic portrayal of Samnang, a Southeast Asian woman who was abducted as a child and trafficked as a sex slave. Years later, as she struggles to survive in NYC as a nanny and domestic worker, events trigger flashbacks to her own traumatized childhood and the daughter who was taken from her as a child. The young girl she looks after becomes a surrogate. Samnang’s employer is a busy and demanding single mother, indifferent to and dismissive of Samnang’s life outside of her childcare responsibilities. Samnang’s deep-seated need to alleviate her horrific memories inevitably collide with these responsibilities, culminating in a strangled cry against the deadening of the soul.

CKS Phnom Penh will host Celia Tuchman-Rosta to speak on Friday July 27th. Her presentation “It's in Our Blood:” Investigating the Importance of Classical Dance for Identity Construction and Economic Growth in Cambodia.
This presentation is in addition to the recently publicized lecture Dr. Caroline Herbelin of Toulouse II-Le Mirail University which will take place on the 3rd of August also in Phnom Penh
Celia Tuchman-Rosta is a Ph.D. Candidate in the department of anthropology at the University of California, Riverside. Her dissertation project, “Survival of an Art: The Revitalization on Classical Dance in Cambodia” investigates the impacts of tourism and globalization on the creative and economic development of Classical Cambodian Dance. It also explores the importance of the art form for identity re-construction and cultural reconciliation after the civil war. She is currently in Cambodia conducting 18 months of ethnographic research in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap with support from the Center for Khmer Studies and Fulbright (the U.S. Department of State).
Abstract: This presentation examines the effects of large-scale processes such as globalization and economics on Classical Cambodian Dance (Robam Boran Khmer). In order to explore this issue, it will focus on four individual artists, two in Siem Reap and two in Phnom Penh. These central examples will show how artists see themselves and their work in relation to tourism, globalization and Cambodia's economy. Analyzing individual artistic experiences will give insight into how the preservation and development of classical dance is connected to the recovery of cultural identity and memory in Cambodia in the decades after devastating civil war. By exploring the stories and creative work of these artists, this discussion will highlight how Robam Boran has become an international symbol of Cambodian culture. It will examine how classical dance has found a niche in Cambodia's economy both in the business world and in the country's cultural tourism industry. Lastly the presentation will discuss how individual artists internalize the issues of tourism and globalization and how this affects their artistic production.

KHMER ARTS AND HANDICRAFTS IN FRENCH COLONIAL POLICY
Dr. Caroline Herbelin Toulouse 2-Le Mirail University
Brief Biography: Dr. Caroline Herbelin is an Assistant Professor in History at the University of Toulouse, France, with a research focus on material culture and cross-cultural studies and teaching Modern Asian History, the History of Colonial Societies in Asia, and the history of Vietnamese and Chinese Art. She completed her Ph.D at the University of Paris IV, Sorbonne on the history of architecture and urban planning in Vietnam. She is currently writing a book that explores cultural interactions and mechanisms of hybridity through the manifestation of architecture in colonial and postcolonial contexts. This summer, CKS is supporting her to begin a project examining notions of “art” and “handicraft” and how they have been shaped by colonial and postcolonial situations in Southeast Asia.
Abstract: This presentation is part of a larger project that critically examines the use of categories of arts and handicrafts in Cambodia across the 20th century. For this talk she will focus more precisely on the colonial period. At that time, arts and handicrafts had been the object of a particularly strong policy led by Georges Groslier aimed at the “revival” of Khmer arts considered as “decadent”. Also, she proposes to analyze how the concepts of “handicrafts” and “tradition” were tightly controlled and shaped, for example in the education program of the Ecole des Arts Cambodgiens or in the display of different exhibitions both in the colony and in the metropole. She is particularly interested in the artifacts that this policy put aside and criticized because they were considered as not “authentic”. Even if the colonial elite considered them as the expression of “bad taste”, they actually reveals that there were craftsmen working outside of the official path, proposing an inventive and original type of art.
The Public Lecture Series, which is open to the general public, is an outgrowth of the successful academic lecture and seminar programs in Phnom Penh. The aim is to draw together Cambodian and international scholars, business people and artists to discuss topics in the field of Cambodian and Southeast Asian studies, across all disciplines in the social sciences, arts and humanities on a monthly basis. The lectures and seminars provide an excellent opportunity for junior and senior Cambodian scholars to interact with others around topics of common interest. The intention is to extend participation beyond CKS research Fellows to all those interested, including local universities and CKS alumni. Lectures and seminars will be held at both CKS sites, in the capital Phnom Penh and at our headquarters in Siem Reap.

写真展では、カンボジアのアンコール小児病院を訪れた方が撮影した写真を展示。アマチュアカメラマンならではの、新鮮な目線で捉えた、カンボジアの風景や子どもたちの姿が映し出されます。スナーダイ・クマエ孤児院では、孤児院で暮らしている子どもたちが絵を描くことを学び、彼らから見たカンボジアや日常のシーンが活き活きと描かれた作品の数々が絵画展として日本にやってきます。去年もご覧になられた方は、今年の新作を見て、子どもたちの絵の上達ぶりや成長が感じられて、より一層お楽しみいただけるのでは？ぜひご来場ください。

写真展では、カンボジアのアンコール小児病院を訪れた方が撮影した写真を展示。アマチュアカメラマンならではの、新鮮な目線で捉えた、カンボジアの風景や子どもたちの姿が映し出されます。スナーダイ・クマエ孤児院では、孤児院で暮らしている子どもたちが絵を描くことを学び、彼らから見たカンボジアや日常のシーンが活き活きと描かれた作品の数々が絵画展として日本にやってきます。去年もご覧になられた方は、今年の新作を見て、子どもたちの絵の上達ぶりや成長が感じられて、より一層お楽しみいただけるのでは？ぜひご来場ください。
＊アンコール小児病院は、フレンズ・ウィズアウト・ア・ボーダーがアメリカと共同で運営・管理している医療施設です。
