Cambodian Living Arts was founded by Arn Chorn-Pond, a Cambodian-American refugee featured in the Emmy nominated movie, THE FLUTE PLAYER. Arn founded the organization to support the music teachers who helped him survive the horrors of the Khmer Rouge. Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) supports the revival of Cambodian art forms, many of which were nearly lost under the Khmer Rouge, and inspires the contemporary expression of Cambodia’s arts. Tonite we are screening the CLA films GONGS ACROSS BORDERS and a documentation of the 3rd Cambodian Youth Arts Festival in Battambang. Also screening: SMOT by Neang Kavich about Khmer funeral music.

Written and directed by Jean-Baptiste Phou, 90 min., 2010, French Version The film captures a theatrical reading by Mathieu Pheng, made in Paris in April 2010 with Sonadie San, Piseth Malika Keo, Vantha Talisman, Chaya Roat and Santha Leng
In this contemporary theater scene, four women confront both their pasts and their future aspirations. 20 year-old Sophea is a Khmer-French woman in search of her roots; 28 year-old Sovandara is a newly-arriving to married in France; 36 year-old Mom is a survivor of the genocide regime and today determined to adopt a little girl in her country of origin; 52 year old Metha was exiled before the war and is now returning to Kampuchea to see her dying mother for the last time.

The NGO Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS) from Battambang enjoys international recognition through its circus. Since 1998 PPS has produced numerous shows that have been staged in Europe, Korea and Philippines. Phare’s latest invention is its animation film studio, directed by Poi Chhunly. Tonite you can watch the best animation films from PPS. The documentary 25 FRAMES TO MOVE is produced by Meta House film school students and follows the amazing career of animation film maker Poi Chhunly, who comes from a poor family. Also screening: “TWO PEOPLE LIVE NEAR EACH OTHER and Moha Reusey Bros Kla, produced by Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center.

A tiger is bitten and killed by a snake when he falls asleep on top of the snake’s nest. A hermit passes by and feels pity for the tiger and heals him. But the tiger is ungrateful and tries to eat the hermit because he has been woken up. The hermit seeks the advice of a court, but in vain! All the courts fear the power of the tiger…

Double Bill with films by Cambodian and foreign filmmakers about the legacy of Khmer Rouge. Three young Khmer directors (Triple S Productions) follow a Cambodian blogger, a priest and an orphanage director for their M.E.T.A. film school debut film THREE GENERATIONS (2009, 15min). Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann are the best-known East-German documentarists. KAMPUCHEA: DEATH AND REBIRTH (1979, 90min) is the first film after KR. The scenes filmed during spring 1979 are part of history: Phnom Penh left to rampant nature, heaps of skulls and destroyed faces. The reports from the survivors are moving and harrowing. You can watch it only at Meta House!
